Holding Space Advanced – Personal Preparations for the complexity

This advanced workshop is for anyone who has attended at least one workshop on Holding Space with Heather Plett (either in-person or online) and who wants to go beyond the basic concepts.

At this workshop, we will deepen our understanding of what it means to hold space. Building on the basic concepts learned in introductory holding space workshops, we will explore what it means to hold space in complexity, when there is conflict, when there is an imbalance of power and/or privilege, when there is trauma, and/or when there is chaos or disruption. The Circle Way will be used as the primary container for learning and connecting.  We’ll talk about what it takes to increase the amount of safety and belonging available to people in our spaces so that they are able to step into brave conversations that bring about meaningful transformation.

In this interactive workshop, advanced practitioners will have the opportunity to practice hosting and participating in challenging conversations so that they are more prepared to offer this skill in their workplaces, churches, community organizations, families, etc.

At the heart of this work is “love, liberation, and leadership”, and in this workshop we will explore what it means for us, as leaders, to invite people to step off the Cycle of Shame and onto the Cycle of Liberation so that we can transform our systems and cultures into more liberated and loving spaces.

In order to deepen our capacity for holding space in times of complexity and disruption, we need not only self-reflection and self-care, but also a great deal of tenderness with ourselves. At this workshop, you'll learn how to develop a Tenderness Practice which will help sustain and strengthen you for your work in holding space. Heather will draw from her new book, 'Where Tenderness Lives: on healing, liberation, and holding space for oneself' to guide us in this practice."

If you are an advance practitioner and have participated in one of Heather Plett’s workshops in the past, we welcome you to join us for this deeper dive into the practice of holding space.

Reflections of Participants

Kirstin- Coach

"The workshop has been with me for a long time. And actually it still does. I regularly go back to Heather's working method in the circle. In the first workshop about Holding Space, I was mainly concerned with the content that Heather shared. This time I've been much more aware of how Heather herself is the spaceholder and how working in the circle contributes greatly to the process. I also really liked the space I felt in it to do it my way and at my pace. Those are things that I also took with me in the training sessions that I gave myself afterwards. Where the expectations of the group are very different, it is difficult to bring that in. But in the groups where there is already more curiosity about it, I have also had fantastic feedback on its effect on the group. Super nice.

"I've invested a lot in personal development in my life, but the Advanced Workshop Holding Space was truly life-changing. I have experienced what it is like to move in a group in which everyone is completely different and speaks exactly the same language. Everyone comes from completely different worlds and sees the same world and wants to contribute to it. And what 'a leader in every chair' means in practice: everyone supports themselves and everyone supports the group. We have built a mini-world, enriched with ancient rituals that re-emerged in the moment over and over again. Although I will never see Brenda, Heather, Pacha and my fellow trainees again, I know I will never do my job alone again."
